Experience

I have taught university-level courses for seven years, including courses at the University of Oklahoma, and am currently employed as an adjunct instructor at a community college teaching anthropology, linguistics, and other language-related classes. I have also taught English Composition for international students at the University of Central Oklahoma. As a college professor, I truly enjoy interacting with students both in groups and one-on-one, in order to provide students with the best tools possible to ensure academic success. I always work to create a fun learning environment - classes shouldn't be a bore, and outside tutoring should be not just efficient but enjoyable as well. There are multiple ways to approach any subject or concept, and just as anthropologists and linguists use comparative methods to make sense of the world, I teach by example and analogy to make complex concepts more clear. In teaching language, I prefer a combination of conversation, grammar practice, and a cultural approach to help students get to the heart of speaking another language.

Hobbies

I am honestly addicted to reading. I'll read anything I can get my hands on, but given an entire bookstore (a lottery-winning fantasy), I'd read my way through the science fiction and fantasy, the multicultural non-fiction, the religion and philosophy, the classics, and the languages sections first, followed by poetry and other fiction. I also love doing yoga, playing with my dog, experimenting in the kitchen, and hanging out with friends, either playing boardgames or cards or going out for dancing and/or karaoke. I'm a terrible salsa dancer but I'm pretty good at bachata... I'm best at dancing to trance and other electronica. Other elements of the soundtrack to my life include Muse, Lorde, U2, Placebo, Lana del Rey, Imagine Dragons, Florence and the Machine, Coldplay, Garbage, Charli XCX, and Incubus, although I suppose 80's and 90's pop music are a guilty pleasure as well. I'll eat just about anything... But I'd rather eat cheese and salami than potato chips, a crêpe florentine than a cinnamon roll, or drink boba tea (taro please!) rather than an ice cream shake. (Okay, full disclosure: I won't turn down a vanilla malt or a peanut butter and fudge sundae.) Oh! I also l-o-v-e traveling and road trips - this past summer we went to Florida via New Orleans, driving through the night and through gale-force winds to get there! It was totally worth it to eat crawdads in Nawlins and crabcakes in Jacksonville, and to see Harry Potter World with our best friend who lives there now.
